Schools need simple & effective tools to support the academic needs of students struggling with anxiety & stress
When anxiety problems go unaddressed, students experience:
Decreased confidence & academic performance, reflected in grades & test scores
Increased time spent away from class due to being late, absent, or front office visits
More frequent disciplinary actions, bullying incidents, & remediation challenges
That’s why we created COMPASS. Since 2012, we’ve partnered with schools, families, and child psychologists to package the best available Tier 2 tools for addressing anxiety in students into a brief, easy-to-use, and effective program that meets the needs of students and schools.
COMPASS at School uses games & role-play activities to teach students practical skills for self-regulating anxiety, focused on:
Recognizing Emotions
The Match It game teaches students how anxiety appears in thoughts, feelings, bodies, & actions.
Building Calmness
The Relaxation toolkit helps students learn breathing techniques to manage body feelings of anxiety.
Managing Worries
The Worryheads board game teaches students how to change worries into action thoughts & plans.
Making Conversations
The Make Believe role-play activity helps students practice the when’s & how’s of having conversations.
Being Assertive
The Stand Up role-play game helps students practice being assertive in different situations.
Facing Fears
Face It challenges helps students practice facing challenging situations with more confidence.
My favorite part about COMPASS was learning that the more I do things that make me nervous, the less nervous I get.

A game-based approach is rooted in the understanding that students, especially in grades 3-6, learn most effectively when they're engaged and enjoying the process. Games naturally facilitate interaction, discussion, and real-world practice of skills in a safe environment. By integrating serious topics like anxiety management with interactive games, students can grasp and practice coping strategies in memorable ways. This approach not only demystifies anxiety but also empowers students to confront their fears and challenges in a manner that feels relatable and achievable.
